Chapter Eleven

It was my nineteenth birthday, and it had been a long week. I’d spent every morning with my sisters, working on the beauty of our bodies, sculpting and toning, then working on my posture. In the afternoons I spent time with Jacqueline, my goal, accepting my body. While in the evenings I sat with Amelia reading or with Ceclie increasing my knowledge on art, books or current events.

“Amelia?”

“What, my sister?”

“I know you are going to help me with my make-up, but I need to make a call to my aunt. I haven’t been able to charge my cell phone. The outlets are different here.”

“You can use my phone,” Amelia said.

“But no one can know where I’m calling from.”

“It will ring as a private number.”

I walked over to the long vanity table where Amelia sat and took a seat. Amelia worked a honey smelling cream through my curls.

“Are you nervous about seeing Lord Archer again?” Amelia inquired.

I shrugged my shoulders. “A little.”

“Just relax when you are around him. Remember everything we have told you. Allow your body to move as it should, and he will respond.”

“Amelia, I’m not going to sleep with him. I don’t even know him.”

Amelia laughed a seductive sound. “Who said anything about sleeping, my sweet sister? And if you give him your body you will know him better and much more intimately than any of us know him.”

“I’m not ready for that yet,” I confessed.

Amelia brushed the last of the cream through my hair. “Then no worries.”

“Yeah, no worries,” I replied, but I hoped my time with Lord Archer would go well.

When I made it back to my bedroom, everyone, including Alec and Jacqueline, was there. “Happy birthday!” they called out.

“Oh! How did you know?”

“I have my wicked ways,” Jacqueline said.

“Here,” Alec said, handing me a beautifully wrapped package.

“You didn’t need to get me anything,” I replied.

“Take it,” Alec insisted.

I took the silver wrapped gift and smiled as I gazed at it.

“Take a seat,” Jacqueline said.

I pulled up a chair and sat. Everyone crowded in around me.

“Go ahead,” Alec urged, “open it.”

I removed the blue ribbon and bow then went to work on the delicate silver paper. Beneath the wrapping was a large boot box. I lifted the lid on the box to find an exquisite pair of riding boots. I ran a fingertip over the tawny leather.

“Alec, these are beautiful, but I don’t ride horses.”

“You never know when you might be tempted to learn,” Alec said. “I think you should wear them today.”

“To Lord Archer’s?”

“Yes,” Jacqueline said.

“Here,” said Breeze, handing me another gift.

I took the gift, held it to my ear, and shook the box. Everyone giggled. Carefully I unwrapped my treasure, opened the box, and pulled out a pair of riding breeches, tan with inset knee patches. I was beginning to see the theme. I wondered what they knew that I didn’t. I looked up. “Thank you. I should wear them, right?”

Breeze giggled a tinkling sound. “Yes.”

I continued opening gifts from my sisters. I had a new shirt along with a coat that went with the riding boots and riding breeches.
